Bergen, known as the “Queen of Arabesque” in Turkey, was a talented singer whose life became a symbol of resilience against gender-based violence. Despite suffering horrific abuse from her ex-husband, including an acid attack that left her blind in one eye, she continued her music career and became a voice for women’s struggles. Her songs often reflected themes of heartbreak, suffering, and female oppression, resonating deeply with many women. After her tragic murder in 1989, Bergen became a feminist icon in Turkey, representing the fight against domestic violence and the need for stronger protections for women.
